Sax Suite
As one of the first compositional projects I undertook, this original composition had no brief and no constraints, allowing me entire creative freedom. To which I responded with this ternary Jazz suite, featuring a five part saxophone soli.
Ever Heard of Jimmy Noone?
Born in 1895 in Cut Off, Louisiana, Jimmy Noone‘s musical career spanned the early to mid-20th century. He is best remembered for his contributions to the Chicago jazz scene with his band ‘Apex Club Orchestra’. He while the leading voice in jazz was dominated by the saxophone, Jimmy retained his voice through the clarinet, his work inspiring this piece.
Arrangements
Throughout university, I took Jazz composition and arranging modules, teaching us the fundamentals of jazz harmony, and how to compose and arrange complex harmonies following many strict rules. In the three haromony excersizes below, I have created five part solis using ‘Drop 2’ and ‘4 way close’ harmony, thinkening an already existing lead. These excersizes taught me so much about jazz harmony and have provided a solid foundation to compose my own Jazz.
